Dollar Near Three-Month Low as Treasury Yields Decline, Markets React Calmly

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, the U.S. dollar hovered close to a three-month minimum amid a continued decline in long-term Treasury yields. The dollar index hovered around 98.81 against six leading currencies. The euro gained strength to approximately $1.1676, reaching its peak since late May. The Japanese yen also appreciated, trading near 158.45 per dollar. Market participants absorbed new measures from the U.S. Treasury and the latest Federal Reserve meeting notes.

Dollar trades near three-month low as Treasury yields ease
The dollar index stays near a three-month low amid lower long-term US Treasury yields.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to boost liquidity support buybacks for longer-dated government securities. The maximum purchase amount will increase from $2 billion to $4 billion for eligible operations. The program targets nominal coupon securities with maturities between 10 and 20 years and between 20 and 30 years. These larger transactions are scheduled to commence on September 9 and will extend through November 4, marking the conclusion of the current quarterly refunding period.

Following this announcement, yields on long-term Treasury bonds declined. The 30-year yield was near 5.18% on Thursday after a sharp drop in the previous session, having reached 5.337% earlier this week, a level not seen since 2007. Treasury yields significantly influence global currency and bond markets by impacting returns on dollar-denominated assets. The U.S. Treasury also intends to publish an updated tentative schedule for the expanded buyback initiatives.

Major Currencies Rise as Dollar Weakens

The decline of the dollar supported gains across several major currencies during Asian trading hours. The pound traded around $1.3604 and remained near a three-month high. The Swiss franc appreciated to about 0.7999 per dollar. The euro held above $1.16 after building on gains from the previous trading session. The yen moved further away from the 160-per-dollar mark that it had recently approached. Meanwhile, the dollar index stayed below 99, close to its lowest point since May.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July 28 and 29 meetings indicated that policymakers remain focused on persistent inflation. They kept the federal funds target range at 3.5% to 3.75%. Nine policymakers supported maintaining current rates, while three favored a quarter-point hike. The Fed also noted that economic activity continued to grow at a solid rate. Inflation remains above the central bank’s 2% goal, keeping price pressures central to policy considerations.

Differences Emerge Among Fed Members Over Interest Rate Policy

During the July meeting, several policymakers expressed readiness to support a rate increase if necessary. Many argued that higher rates might be needed if inflation did not trend toward the 2% target. The central bank maintained its current approach to reserves in the financial system and continued rolling over principal payments from Treasury securities at auction. The Federal Reserve’s next policy gathering is scheduled for September 15 and 16.

The recent currency movements reflected falling long-term yields and newly released U.S. policy details. The dollar index remained near levels observed about three months ago, while the 30-year Treasury yield stayed below the 19-year high reached earlier this week. The expanded government bond buybacks will begin in September, with the federal funds target range remaining unchanged. These developments continued to influence trading across foreign exchange and U.S. government debt markets on Thursday.
