THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Following measurable precipitation and a notable decrease in wildfire activity, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the regional restricted fire zone and travel ban across Northwestern Ontario will be removed. Provincial forestry authorities confirmed that the emergency orders banning open burning and access to backcountry areas were officially revoked starting at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday. This move concludes weeks of strict outdoor burning bans implemented to reduce extreme fire risks in the region.

Officials in charge of fire management announced that valid burning permits are now reinstated, allowing activities such as outdoor campfires, recreational fires, and fireworks displays in accordance with standard safety protocols. Meanwhile, municipal leaders in Thunder Bay revealed that local fire bans would also end at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, while reminding residents that municipal permits are still required for open fires. The decision to lift restrictions was attributed to cooler weather conditions and widespread rainfall that significantly decreased available combustible materials.

Restrictions on Fire Zones and Travel to Be Removed Throughout Northwestern Ontario

Alongside the termination of burning restrictions, emergency management officials lifted localized access restrictions in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation communities. Transportation agencies confirmed that key regional routes, including Highway 527 and Highway 811, are now fully open to civilian traffic. This reopening allows residents displaced by the restrictions to return to their homes and restores regular commercial and recreational travel on main roads.

Ontario Forest Fires tracking systems confirmed that orders related to major fire complexes such as Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34 were rescinded at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Previously issued evacuation alerts affecting the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border have also been canceled after safety evaluations indicated that active suppression efforts successfully contained perimeter threats.

Regional Fire Restrictions Lifted in the Early Morning

Despite the end of regional bans, fire officials stressed that wildland firefighting crews are still actively managing remaining remote fires. Emergency responders warned that although immediate safety risks have decreased, the public must remain cautious when igniting fires on dry terrain. Monitoring groups will continue observing humidity levels and lightning activity to update hazard ratings across the summer fire season.

Local leaders in affected northern municipalities welcomed the end of emergency measures, noting that the restored access will support local outfitters and tourism industries. The provincial government expressed appreciation to residents and visitors for following restrictions during periods of high danger. As the measures are fully lifted, authorities emphasize that outdoor enthusiasts must continue to comply with provincial fire regulations to ensure safety.
