CAMBRIDGE, Ontario / RankWire.AI  / — All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Highway 8 were shut down on Wednesday afternoon after a collision involving three vehicles near Speedsville Road in Cambridge. First responders arrived shortly after 2:30 p.m. to find the scene, where traffic management teams redirected incoming vehicles off the expressway to allow safe access for medical and recovery crews. The crash, which involved multiple vehicles, resulted in immediate severe congestion for commuters traveling between Cambridge and Kitchener.

Dump truck rollover causes major Hwy 401 closure today
Emergency medical personnel transport injured motorists to regional hospitals for critical care.

The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that a large dump truck had overturned across the highway during the multi-vehicle accident. At the scene, first responders found two injured individuals who required urgent medical attention before being transported to the hospital. Police reports indicated that one person sustained minor injuries, while the other suffered more severe injuries. The identities of those injured were not immediately disclosed in the initial updates from local authorities.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt delivered an official update via social media platform X, explaining the immediate obstacles faced by recovery teams. Schmidt stated that the overturned dump truck created a situation requiring a significant cleanup effort before normal traffic flow could be restored. Authorities advised all drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes during the afternoon commute. Heavy delays persisted as law enforcement diverted oncoming traffic away from the blocked eastbound lanes.

Two Motorists Sustaining Injuries Are Taken to Regional Hospitals

The extensive traffic disruption caused a ripple effect throughout the surrounding areas, bringing traffic to a complete halt between Cambridge and Kitchener. Highway officials warned travelers to expect prolonged delays extending into the King Street East and Shantz Hill neighborhoods. The sudden closures caused significant congestion during rush hour across the affected sections of the expressway. Throughout the afternoon, traffic remained backed up, putting additional pressure on local police units managing the overflow of heavy vehicles.

Cleanup crews arrived to handle the overturned dump truck and scattered debris, working diligently to clear the damage and debris from the asphalt. The removal of the damaged vehicles and materials involved a considerable effort and was expected to take several hours. Incident commanders oversaw the complex removal process, ensuring all spilled materials were thoroughly cleared from the roadway. The lengthy cleanup underscored the severe delays experienced on the heavily traveled 401 corridor during major commercial accidents.

Environmental Teams Manage Spilled Materials During Recovery

Following the crash that closed all eastbound lanes of Hwy 401 at Hwy 8 in Cambridge, regional police coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation officials to oversee the site. After comprehensive debris removal efforts, emergency management teams officially reopened all lanes at 7:25 p.m. The successful clearance of the crash scene allowed backed-up traffic to gradually disperse after hours of complete roadway closure. Police later confirmed the route’s reopening, marking the end of the extensive afternoon cleanup.

The investigation into the sequence of events leading to the severe rollover remains ongoing under the jurisdiction of provincial law enforcement. Collision reconstruction experts are analyzing vehicle damage patterns and environmental factors to identify the primary cause of the multi-vehicle entanglement. Officials will release further updates as their inquiries develop. Safety advocates continue urging increased caution from commercial drivers and passenger vehicles navigating the busy provincial highway network, especially at congested intersections.
